An Introduction is a highly readable and rewarding initiation into a complex, ancient civilization, by one of India\'s most widely-read writers and journalists. Khushwant Singh tells the story of the land and its people from the earliest time to the present day. In broad, vivid sweeps he encapsulates the saga of the upheavals of a sub-continent over five millennia, and how their interplay over the centuries has moulded the India of today. More, Khushwant Singh offers perceptive insights into everything Indian that may catch one\'s eye or arouse curiosity its ethnic diversity, religions, customs, philosophy, art and culture, political currents, and the galaxy of men and women who have helped shape its intricately inlaid mosaic. He is also an enlightening guide to much else India\'s extensive and varied architectural splendours, its art and classical literature. Khushwant Singh\'s own fascination with the subject is contagious, showing through on every page, and in every sidelight that he recounts. India An Introduction holds strong appeal for just about anyone who has more than a passing interest in the country, Indians as well as those who are drawn to it from farther afield. And for a traveller, it is that rare companion erudite, intelligent, lively.

As the title implies, this is not and extensive history of India. At 212 pages, plus index, it is just an introduction. That 'introduction', however, does not limit the time period covered. Singh provides it all. As in any book about India, it is impossible to separate the political history from the religious history. They have been and are intimately intertwined.

His treatment of the religions of India take up nearly the first half of the book. They are fairly and adequately described. From there, he takes us through the political history which builds on the religious element.

I like to read books, both fiction and non-fiction, by Indian authors and by others about the country. I use the non-fiction as reference books to look up specific information. I was wanting an overview book that would provide the context of those references. This book was just what I wanted.

This material was taken from lectures Singh had given over the years. He revised and added material in 1998. Unfortunately, those additions underwent little editing and no corrections have been made in subsequent reprintings. This only affects the last few dozen pages and is not a major problem.

This book would serve well as a 'cram' source. Do not, though, start underlining as you read. There is no fluff in this book and you would be marking the vast majority of the material. If you have an interest in India's history but are not wanting an extensive depth of knowledge, I heartily recommend this.

Great introduction. for Indians as well.....
An excellent book about the history of India - so much information and well introduced. Very, very interesting....very informative. Book arrived in new condition, too!! Carolyn Jenkins
To pack millenniums of Indian history in 200+ pages is in itself is an extraordinary feat. Only Khushwant-like writers can attempt to execute such a task. To get a clear glimpse of ancient and modern history in a span of few hours is a matter for rarity for readers. I recommend this book for anyone seriously interested in India.
Good background info.
It was a delight to read. In a style which is unique to him, Khushwant Singh did it again even on a topic as big as India.
A must read as an Introduction to Indian History for all those who are interested in knowing India. This should be read by all foreign citizens with Indian roots.
An excellent intro to Indian society, written in a delightful manner. Singh obviously has great love for the country, but doesn't shy away from its problems.
The biggest issue with the book is that it stops in the 1980s, so all of the recent developments in India (rise of the BJP, economic liberalization and its effects) are not touched. Still, I think this book was great for the rest of the history it presents.
